Applying for the NPS OSSC Scholarship

Scholarship applications are available at the Fleet Family Service Center in La Mesa Village and at the International Student Office at NPS after March 15, 2008. The application can also be printed directly from this website at this time. For more information contact scholarships@npsossc.org.

A complete application must be submitted to:

no later than May 1, 2008.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. The applicant must be one of the following:
    • An OSSC member
    • Child of any OSSC member
    • Spouse or child of any NPS student (including international students)
    • Spouse or child of any NPS or NSAMB military staff member
    • Spouse or child of any member of an NPS tenant command
    • Spouse or child of a NPS graduate
  2. The applicant must hold a valid military identification card. All applications will be verified for eligibility.
  3. The applicant must intend to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree with a minimum of 6 semester hours or 9 quarter hours for the Summer or Fall 2008 Term.

SELECTION

The OSSC Scholarship Committee will make all selections. The Committee will select multiple recipients to receive a minimum scholarship of $500 each. All decisions made by the Committee are final. Applicants will be judged anonymously; the names of the applicants will remain unknown to the Committee members until after the selection process is complete. If the Committee determines there are no eligible applicants, scholarships will not be awarded.

Evaluation of applications will be based on the following criteria:

  • MERIT
  • ACADEMIC PROMISE: GPA, SAT/ACT scores
  • PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Community, school, church and other activities and organizations
  • ESSAY
  • REFERENCES

CONDITIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

The scholarship award must be applied toward tuition, books, student fees and other college-related expenses. Scholarship recipients must provide proof of enrollment in college before being issued the scholarship check. After verification of enrollment, a check will be sent from the OSSC to the college chosen by the recipient. Scholarship money must be awarded by December 31, 2008.

In the event the recipient should receive an appointment to a service academy, the scholarship will be automatically transferred to a qualified first alternate.
